Hey Pune peeps, have you heard the latest buzz about the city’s transport infrastructure? Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) is on a roll with the Pune Ring Line Metro project, also known as the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) Metro. This massive 36-kilometer project with 44 stations is set to encircle the entire city, providing a much-needed boost to Pune’s transport system.
Just a few days ago, on 4th October, MahaMetro issued a tender notice to appoint a General Consultant (GC) for Phase 2 of the project. The GC will be responsible for overseeing various consultancy services like design, supervision, safety, quality control, and contract management for the next five years. The estimated cost for this contract? A whopping ₹2,40,00,000 crore!
But wait, there’s more! Phase 2 of the Pune Ring Line Metro project has been in the works for a while now. Back in 2021, MahaMetro submitted a draft Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for Phase 2, which included plans for routes totaling 82.5 kilometers. Fast forward to today, and we see that plans have been revised to include two elevated extensions of the Aqua Line in Phase 1A—Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi.
And that’s not all! Pune Metro has also invited tenders for the design and construction of underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. These stations are part of the Swargate-Katraj extension of the Purple Line, which currently runs from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate.
The excitement doesn’t stop there. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for the Swargate-Katraj extension, marking yet another milestone in Pune’s metro expansion. With all these developments in the works, it’s safe to say that Pune’s transport system is on the fast track to modernization.
