The education sector in Maharashtra is gearing up for a major protest on August 6, 2024, as 28 education-related unions come together to address unresolved issues affecting aided and Marathi medium schools in the state. Despite efforts by educational organizations, the government has yet to act, leading to a one-day strike.

The Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary School Principals’ Board, along with management and teacher unions, have announced that schools and colleges statewide will be closed on August 6. The unions will present their grievances at district collector offices.

Key demands of the school closure movement include correcting government decisions, implementing old pension schemes, providing full subsidies for schools, expediting teacher appointments, approving non-teaching staff positions, reinstating previous salary structures, filling vacant teacher posts, approving art and sports teacher positions, implementing cashless mediclaim schemes, extending old pension schemes to new staff, announcing grants for senior colleges, aligning salary grants with the Seventh Pay Commission, expediting promotions and appointments, and ensuring compliance with the Service Guarantee Act.

The strike and protest are a response to the government’s inaction on these critical issues, which have been impacting the functioning and sustainability of educational institutions in Maharashtra.
