Good evening Pune! Today, on the 11th of June 2024, we bring you some interesting insights from the recent book launch event at the Gokhale Institute. Prof Neeraj Hatekar, while discussing his latest book titled “प्रादेशिक विषमतेचा नवा आयाम” co-authored with Dr Savita Kulkarni, highlighted the fact that Maharashtra is lagging behind conventionally backward states like UP and Bihar in terms of multidimensional deprivation index.

Dr Savita Kulkarni emphasized the importance of public infrastructure in rural areas, stating that economic development becomes difficult without adequate infrastructure. She pointed out the uneven distribution of resources across villages in Maharashtra as highlighted in their book.

Prof Hatekar further mentioned that Maharashtra lags behind in access to Vocational Training, SSC schools, and Sanitation, when compared to other states in terms of infrastructural availability. He also mentioned that the luminosity of night lights can be an indicator of economic activity in a region, with lower luminosity indicating higher deprivation.

During the event, Prof Suhas Palshikar acknowledged the efforts of the co-authors in creating a dynamic dataset but also pointed out socio-political factors that may affect the recording and interpretation of data. Dr Ajit Ranade highlighted the importance of the political machinery in addressing economic challenges at a granular level.

The program concluded with an interactive question and answer session where faculty members of Gokhale Institute raised questions and shared their insights related to the topics of discussion. The event was a success, shedding light on important issues related to development and infrastructure in Maharashtra.
