Pune, 18th February 2025: The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to establish 350-400 wayside hubs along its extensive road network to address the lack of restrooms along state highways. These hubs will include restrooms and eateries, strategically placed every 30 to 40 kilometers apart across all districts.
The PWD will collaborate with private agencies to construct and operate these facilities, with construction already underway at select locations. The department is evaluating proposals from various agencies with experience in providing similar services along national highways.
The aim of this initiative is to enhance travel comfort for long-distance travelers and fill infrastructure gaps along state highways. The PWD plans to implement a sustainable model that may include minimal charges for using the facilities and eateries to offset maintenance costs.
While some hubs are already operational, the PWD plans to replicate similar facilities at other locations within the next six months. An app is also in development to help travelers easily locate these amenities.
However, concerns have been raised by some commuters about the maintenance of these facilities, with activists advocating for third-party inspections to ensure high standards are met and maintained.
