Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and Maval taluka in Pune district is making waves in the global flower trade. This year, the region has exported a whopping 2 crore roses to international markets, all thanks to the high demand for these beautiful blooms. In addition to the exports, the local market has received 80 lakh roses, bringing in good profits for the growers.

Maval taluka is known for its extensive floriculture, with hundreds of acres dedicated to rose cultivation. The farmers in the region practice enclosed flower cultivation, a cost-effective method made possible by the abundant water supply in the area. The Central Government’s support in the form of loan concessions for enclosed floriculture has further boosted the growth of this industry.

The demand for Maval’s roses is not just limited to international markets; major cities across India, including Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, are also significant consumers of these roses. The most sought-after varieties for Valentine’s Day include Red Naomi, Black Baccara, Explorer, and Freedom, known for their deep hues and long-lasting freshness.

When it comes to pricing, Maval’s roses are fetching Rs 15-16 per flower in international markets, while the local market is selling them for Rs 17-18 per flower. Traders like Somnath Thakar are reporting strong sales, with roses being sold at Rs 250-300 per bunch.

The favorable weather conditions this year have contributed to a significant increase in rose exports from Maval. Mukund Thakar, the founder of the Pavana Flower Growers Association, notes that the absence of cold weather has led to a boost in exports, with Maval selling approximately 2 crore flowers this Valentine’s season.

Overall, Maval taluka’s rose industry is thriving, with a successful export season and high demand both domestically and internationally. With the support of the government and favorable weather conditions, the future looks bright for this flourishing industry.
