The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently held an industrial meet in Pune to showcase the achievements of the Centre of Excellence on Rechargeable Battery Technology (CoE), also known as Pre-cell. The CoE is leading research and development in lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-polymer battery technologies, with a focus on reducing import dependency and promoting sustainability in manufacturing.

The CoE aims to position India as a global leader in rechargeable battery technology, particularly in the areas of electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and sustainability. Key objectives include self-reliance in manufacturing, industry collaboration, and applied research to meet growing energy demands.

During the meet, Secretary S. Krishnan emphasized the importance of collaboration between research institutions and industries in advancing battery technology. Additional Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar highlighted the role of entrepreneurs and large industries in scaling up MeitY-developed technologies.

The event saw participation from industry associations and prominent companies, with stakeholders expressing interest in partnering with the CoE to promote indigenous battery innovations. Three MoUs were signed with leading organizations to collaborate on sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery advancements.

Pune was chosen as the base for the CoE due to its strong industrial ecosystem and history of technological innovation. The centre’s work aligns with India’s goals of supporting renewable energy adoption and enhancing global competitiveness in advanced manufacturing.

The industrial meet and efforts of the CoE mark a significant step toward India’s energy independence and sustainability. By fostering collaboration between government, industry, and research institutions, MeitY is driving India towards a greener, technology-driven future powered by innovative battery solutions. With stakeholders uniting, India is set to lead the global transition towards advanced rechargeable battery technologies for a sustainable and energy-efficient tomorrow.
