Social worker Anjali Damania has thrown a major curveball in the kidnapping and murder case of Beed district’s Sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh. Damania made shocking claims that the absconding accused in the case have been murdered, based on a tip-off she received from an anonymous phone call. She wasted no time in calling for the resignation of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Protection Minister and Parali MLA Dhananjay Munde over the issue.
In a swift response, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar West MLA Sanjay Shirsat, speaking to reporters in Pune, urged Damania to work with authorities instead of making unsubstantiated accusations.
Damania revealed that she received a mysterious WhatsApp call and voicemail suggesting that the accused in Deshmukh’s case had already met their demise and would never be found. The caller even provided a location for where their bodies could be found. While Damania acknowledged the uncertainty of this information, she raised concerns about why Munde, a member of the NCP faction within the government, has not stepped down.
Shirsat, a Cabinet Minister of Social Justice in the Shiv Sena faction allied with Munde, fired back at Damania’s claims. He dismissed them as baseless allegations and urged her to share any information she has with the police. Shirsat emphasized that the government is committed to bringing the accused to justice and that no one will escape punishment.
The Maharashtra government has come under intense scrutiny for its handling of Deshmukh’s murder, leading to protests in Beed. The victim was abducted, assaulted, and later found dead, with a post-mortem revealing multiple injuries. While four individuals, including ex-NCP leader Vishnu Chate, have been arrested, three others are still on the run. The victim’s family has accused NCP leader Walmik Karad of involvement in an extortion racket.
Opposition parties have lambasted the government for its failure to maintain law and order. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a judicial probe and the formation of a Special Investigation Team to look into the matter. Karad is facing extortion charges under MCOCA and may also be implicated in the murder.
