In a major achievement, MIT World Peace University in Pune has successfully launched its first space payload, STeRG-P1.0, in collaboration with ISRO. This marks a significant milestone for the university and showcases India’s growing capabilities in cost-effective space technology driven by academic institutions.

The payload, developed by students and faculty from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, focuses on testing cost-effective solutions for advanced space applications. It features COTS MEMS-based 9-axis IMU sensors and ARM-based microcontrollers for attitude determination, along with advanced data filtration techniques and high-resolution data acquisition for optimized performance.

The project involved 38 weeks of intensive development by students, supported by faculty guidance, highlighting the potential of academic research in advancing practical space technology. Dr. Parul Jadhav, Program Director of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment, emphasizing the innovative and cost-effective solutions that emerged from student-driven research.

Prof. Dr. Murthy Chavali Yadav, Dean of R&D at MIT-WPU, praised the payload’s significance and MIT-WPU’s commitment to fostering innovation in space technology. Achintya Chaware, Project Founder of STeRG 1.0, noted the dedication of students and faculty, alongside ISRO and IN-SPACe’s invaluable guidance, in achieving this milestone.

The team faced challenges in orbital mechanics, system integration, and meeting space qualification standards during the development journey. Mission Lead Shreerang Saranjame highlighted the immense reward of eight months of intense effort culminating in a flawless final test.

ISRO and IN-SPACe provided technical support during the review process, with the project’s robust and electrically redundant system earning praise from ISRO committees and the PSLV project director. The STeRG team is now planning ambitious projects such as developing a CubeSat, establishing a dedicated ground station for satellite tracking and communication, and participating in national and international competitions in core space technologies.

The successful launch of STeRG-P1.0 underscores the role of academic institutions in space exploration, providing students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge technologies, strengthening collaborations, and boosting India’s space capabilities.
