Hey there, Pune residents! It’s time to break out those umbrellas and raincoats because the monsoon has officially arrived in Maharashtra State. On Thursday, Pune, along with Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur, experienced some much-needed rainfall. And guess what? The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is predicting even more rain starting from Saturday.

According to the IMD, monsoon showers have been spotted in various areas like Ratnagiri and Solapur in Maharashtra, as well as Medak, Bhadrachalam, and Vijayanagar in Telangana. The rains have even made their way to Islampur in West Bengal. The conditions are just right for the monsoon to progress further, with Mumbai, Vidarbha, and North Maharashtra gearing up for some wet weather in the next few days.

A low-pressure zone has popped up in the Arabian Sea near Goa, which is speeding up the Arabian Sea monsoon branch. This means that we can expect heavier rainfall starting from Saturday, especially in Konkan, Mumbai, and the nearby districts of the Western Ghats.

Typically, monsoon rains hit Goa by the 5th of June and South Konkan by the 7th of June. This year, South Konkan got its share of rain a day earlier. On average, Pune usually gets its first rainfall by the 10th of June, followed by Mumbai on the 11th of June. Dr Anupam Kashyapi, a retired scientist from IMD, believes that we might see the monsoon arrive in Pune and Mumbai a bit early this year. And heads up, an orange warning has been issued for Kolhapur and Sindhudurg, predicting heavy rains on Sunday and Monday.

In case you’re curious, here are the onset dates of monsoon rains in Maharashtra for the past few years:– 2024: 6th June– 2023: 11th June– 2021: 5th June– 2020: 11th June– 2019: 20th June

So, get ready to embrace the monsoon season, Pune! Stay safe and enjoy the rainy days ahead.
