Hey Pune peeps, looks like two PMC hospitals are in hot water with the MPCB! The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has slapped them with notices for not following bio-medical waste regulations. The hospitals, located in Timber Market and Mitra Mandal Chowk areas, have been given one month to set up separate bio-medical waste storage facilities.

Regional Officer J.S. Salunkhe means business, as he also ordered the hospitals to adhere to the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules of 2016. They must submit their annual reports and details of their wastewater treatment facilities within the deadline.

To avoid further trouble, the hospitals have been told to keep records of biomedical waste storage, segregate the waste by category, and use color-coded bags for storage until disposal. One hospital in Mitra Mandal Chowk had already received a warning in May but failed to shape up.

The MPCB is not messing around, as interim directions have been given under Section 33A of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974, and Section 31A of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1981. Legal action is on the table if the hospital doesn’t comply, and they have just seven days to submit a report.

Let’s hope these hospitals get their act together before facing more trouble from the MPCB. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story!
