The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has clarified its stance on conducting the pre-recruitment examination for vacant positions in the Agriculture Department. The exam is set to take place by the end of October 2024, with an official announcement expected in the next two to three days. Despite student protests urging for the inclusion of these vacancies in the upcoming state service examination on August 25, 2024, the MPSC has confirmed that the exam will proceed as planned.

Thousands of students in Pune protested late into the night on Shastri Road, demanding that the vacant Agriculture Department posts be included in the August 25 exam. In response, the MPSC reassured students in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) at 1:29 AM on Tuesday that the pre-exam for the Agriculture Department will be held by October 2024. The MPSC encouraged students to focus on their studies and emphasized that the August 25 exam would not be postponed.

MPSC has announced that the advertisement for Group A, Group B, and Group B (Junior) cadre positions in the Maharashtra Agriculture Service will be released in the next few days. This comes after demands from competitive examinees to include 258 Gazetted Officers (Group A and Group B) posts and 1,018 vacant positions in the Agriculture Department in the upcoming state service exam.

The delay in communicating the demand letter for Agriculture Department vacancies to the MPSC has led to criticism, with students pointing fingers at the General Administration Department and the Agriculture Department for the slow response. Despite the state government’s order to provide vacancy information, students are frustrated with the lack of timely communication.

Although the MPSC has addressed the issue, many students are still unsatisfied with the exclusion of Agriculture Department vacancies from the August 25 exam. Some feel that their preparations for agriculture-related posts have been disregarded. There are concerns that protests may continue, with political organizations gearing up to take a strong stance on the matter.

One agriculture student shared, “We have been advocating for the government’s attention for six months, and our efforts have paid off. If our demands are not met in the future, we will protest legally with proper permissions. For now, our protest has been successful and is on hold.”
