The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is finally gearing up to revamp the Swargate bus depot in Pune, a much-needed upgrade that will benefit thousands of passengers. The first phase of the project, with a budget of Rs 20 lakh, will focus on resurfacing the depot with a durable and water-resistant material to eliminate potholes that have plagued the premises for years. This phase is expected to kick off in the coming weeks and last for two months.

Operational since 1961, the Swargate bus depot has faced significant challenges due to its deteriorating condition. Potholes and waterlogging have made it difficult for passengers to navigate, particularly during the rainy season. In addition to resurfacing, MSRTC plans to upgrade the depot’s toilets and conduct a structural audit to determine further renovation needs.

Regular commuters have expressed their frustrations with the depot’s current state, highlighting safety concerns and the lack of proper seating. As part of the second phase of the renovation, 25 charging points will be installed, and facilities for bus drivers and conductors will be improved. This phase, with a budget of Rs 12 lakh, is expected to be completed by April 2025.

With over 1,700 buses passing through the Swargate depot daily and a footfall exceeding 50,000 passengers, the renovation project is crucial in enhancing the overall commuting experience and modernizing MSRTC’s facilities. Further development plans are underway, pending approval based on the structural audit report.
