1. Good news for Pune’s Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development (RFD) Project as a major hurdle has been cleared with the National Green Tribunal dismissing a petition filed by environment activist Sarang Yadwadkar.
  2. The Pune Municipal Corporation has secured a revised environmental ‘no-objection certificate’ (NOC), paving the way for the project to move forward.
  3. The RFD project, inspired by the Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat, aims to beautify the 44 km long Mula-Mutha River banks at a cost of Rs 4,727 crore.
  4. The project will be implemented in 11 stages, with a pilot project of three stages already launched. Rs 700 crore for each stage will come from PMC funds, with the rest on a PPP basis.
  5. Despite legal battles and objections, the revised NOC has now been issued, allowing the project to progress smoothly.
  6. The PMC City Engineer, Prashant Waghmare, mentioned that work on the RFD project will now pick up speed, with bids for the next stages to be floated soon.
  7. Chief Legal Officer Adv Nisha Chavan disclosed the details of the legal challenges faced by the project, including petitions in the NGT, SC, and High Court, all of which were eventually dismissed.
  8. With the technical hurdle cleared and the revised NOC in hand, the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project is set to make significant progress in the coming months.
