Hello Pune residents! Have you heard the latest news about the increasing cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in our city? Well, it turns out that contaminated water is to blame according to the National Institute of Virology (NIV).
In a recent meeting between NIV officials, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and representatives from Maharashtra’s Public Health Department, it was revealed that polluted water supplies are the primary cause of the GBS outbreak. NIV’s analysis of water samples conclusively linked the two, leading to plans for more comprehensive testing with larger water samples.
PMC’s water supplies are currently maintained at 0.6-0.7 ppm chlorine, exceeding the recommended 0.3 ppm for safe distribution. To address the issue, PMC is considering setting up a small-scale water treatment plant with a capacity of 1 million litres per day (MLD) in affected areas such as Nanded City, Nandoshi, Kirkatwadi, Sanas Nagar, and DSK Vishwa.
Private hospitals have reportedly not been cooperating with NIV officials in collecting patient samples, but instructions have been issued to ensure their compliance. Additionally, the PMC plans to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in Pune to improve water quality.
While GBS cases have been observed in the past, the recent surge has prompted further investigation by NIV. The PMC is expected to implement NIV’s recommendations quickly, with decisions on the new water treatment project expected within a month.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, and remember to stay informed and cautious about the water you consume in Pune!
