Hey folks, exciting news from Pune! The National Statistics Office (NSO) recently hosted a Data User Conference at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) focusing on the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for 2023-24. With around 150 attendees from Central Ministries, academic institutions, and international organizations, the event was a hit! Not to mention the 2,200 people who tuned in via live YouTube stream.

Dr. Vijay Kelkar, a renowned economist, was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Saurabh Garg and Dr. Ajit Ranade delivered opening remarks and a special address, respectively. The conference highlighted the importance of using data for informed decision-making, particularly in areas like employment and inclusive growth.

Dr. Garg emphasized the role of technology in enhancing the survey’s reach and effectiveness, mentioning the implementation of computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) method. He also discussed an upcoming survey focusing on private corporate sector capital expenditure (CAPEX) investment intentions and the need for data to drive development, especially in increasing female labor force participation.

Shri Ajit Ranade stressed the significance of data in shaping economic research and policy, especially in understanding labor data for job creation and income opportunities. Dr. Kelkar highlighted the strategic role of the PLFS in guiding employment policies and labor reforms, advocating for the integration of Green GDP metrics to assess economic sustainability.

Technical sessions and panel discussions delved into survey instruments, key results, and stakeholder engagement through data. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, asking questions about district-level estimates and survey stratification criteria.
