Hey guys, have you heard about the recent outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Pune? Well, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) sure has, and they are not happy about it. They have issued notices to the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, asking for details on what they are doing to tackle this health crisis.
The health department has pointed fingers at contaminated water as the culprit behind the outbreak. In response, a group of law students has taken matters into their own hands and filed a petition with the NGT. They are demanding immediate action to ensure clean water supply to the residents of Pune.
The petition doesn’t stop there. It also calls for various government departments to step up and provide medical aid, treatment, and financial assistance to GBS patients. And if that’s not enough, they want the municipal corporations to be penalized for their failure to prevent the outbreak under the ‘polluter pays’ principle.
The NGT seems to be taking this seriously, acknowledging the environmental concerns raised by the petition. They have set a deadline for the municipal corporations to respond and have scheduled the next hearing for April 16. Let’s hope they can get to the bottom of this and prevent any more cases of GBS in Pune.
