The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken action after a news report revealed the issue of open garbage burning in Hadapsar. A committee has been tasked with visiting the site and submitting a report within three weeks.

During previous hearings, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) clarified that the site falls under the PCB’s jurisdiction. The PCB attributed the fire incidents to extreme summer temperatures and assured the tribunal that measures have been implemented to prevent such occurrences.

The PCB claims to have taken preventive measures such as deploying a standby fire engine and water lorry, constructing a masonry water tank for fire suppression, and installing CCTV cameras to monitor illegal waste dumping.

In response to PCB’s submissions, the NGT has directed a panel to verify the implementation of these measures at the site. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 24, 2025.
