Hey Pune peeps! Big news coming your way regarding the Sadhu Vaswani Bridge in Koregaon Park. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been caught in a tree-cutting controversy while demolishing the old bridge to make way for a new one. Environmental activists were quick to raise their concerns with the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
It turns out that PMC mistakenly marked 96 trees for removal near the bridge, even though they were not needed for the construction of the new bridge. The NGT was not pleased with this oversight and issued a strong warning to PMC, threatening punitive action if such mistakes were repeated.
Advocate Maitreya Ghorpade, representing members of the Secular Community, brought this issue to light during a press conference. The NGT has now appointed a committee to investigate the matter on-site and submit a detailed report.
During the inspection conducted in July, it was revealed that PMC did not follow the proper procedures outlined in the Tree Conservation Act. As a result, 96 trees were incorrectly marked for removal. PMC’s Special Projects Department admitted their mistake, leading to the NGT’s reprimand.
To rectify the situation, the NGT has ordered the cancellation of the proposal to cut down 61 trees and directed PMC to submit a new proposal for the remaining 18 trees in accordance with the Tree Conservation Act. The tribunal also recognized the efforts of a senior citizen from Hadapsar, Nandini Devi Pant, who personally counted the red-marked trees and submitted an affidavit to help save them.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, and let’s hope that the trees near Sadhu Vaswani Bridge are saved from unnecessary destruction. #SaveOurTrees #PuneEnvironment #NGTAction
