The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is making strides towards environmental conservation by planting 39,500 trees along the Pune-Nashik highway. This initiative, costing Rs 9.9 crore, aims to offset the 5,486 trees that were cut down during the highway’s construction.
The decision to plant trees comes after environmental activist Ganesh Borhade filed a case in 2020, accusing NHAI of neglecting its obligation to plant compensatory trees. In response, NHAI officials have taken action to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and restore greenery to the region.
The plantation process has already begun and is expected to be completed by next month. NHAI is committed to monitoring the success of the initiative, with a joint committee set to assess the progress and verify the survival of planted trees after five years.
In Pune district, NHAI will focus on planting trees in Ambegaon, Junnar, Khed, and Narayangaon to compensate for those lost during the highway’s construction. This proactive approach to environmental sustainability showcases NHAI’s dedication to balancing infrastructure development with ecological preservation for the benefit of future generations.
