Hey Pune peeps, did you know that noise levels during this year’s Ganeshotsav festival went off the charts? According to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), noise levels at 200 Ganesh Mandals in the city exceeded the maximum permissible limits. The MPCB found that noise pollution levels ranged between 70 to 85 decibels throughout the festival, which is definitely not music to our ears.
The MPCB monitored noise levels from 6 PM to midnight each day between 7th and 16th September, covering central and suburban areas. The findings revealed that noise pollution was a citywide issue during Ganeshotsav. However, interestingly, the MPCB did not record noise levels on the day of the Ganesh Visarjan procession.
The escalating noise pollution during Ganeshotsav caught the attention of Dr. Kalyani Mandke, who filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The NGT directed authorities, including the Pune Police and MPCB, to take action to control noise pollution during the festival. As a result, the MPCB conducted noise level assessments at 200 Ganesh Mandal sites to address the issue.
The permissible noise levels for different zones are as follows:
– Industrial Zone: 75 dB during the day, 70 dB at night
– Commercial Zone: 65 dB during the day, 55 dB at night
– Residential Zone: 55 dB during the day, 45 dB at night
– Silent Zone: 50 dB during the day, 40 dB at night
Kartikeya Langote, Sub Regional Officer of the MPCB, mentioned that a detailed report based on the NGT’s order will be submitted soon. Let’s hope that measures are taken to reduce noise pollution during future festivals to keep our city peaceful and serene.
