In a recent interview, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award-winning director Anuradha Kapur discussed the trend of NSD pass-outs heading to Mumbai in search of work. She emphasized that this “exodus” began in the 70s with actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri making the move to FTII in Pune. Kapur believes that trained actors can easily adapt to different mediums and that directors are now more willing to experiment with storytelling.

She refuted the idea that theatre school pass-outs are abandoning theatre for films and OTTs, noting that many are working in both mediums. Kapur also highlighted the importance of having more theatre repertories in the country, suggesting that governments should support the arts financially.

Kapur shared her experiences working in collaboration with visual artists and filmmakers, emphasizing the need for corporate sponsorship for serious work in the arts. She is currently focused on various writing projects and has plans to turn Ivy Lodge in Kasauli into a space for performance and residency programs.

Overall, Kapur believes in the potential of trained actors and the importance of supporting the arts in India. She continues to be actively involved in promoting theatre and cultural initiatives.
