Market Yard was abuzz with activity on the 12th of November as the old onions supply continued to decrease. This led to a surge in prices, with old onions now selling for Rs. 80 per kg in the retail market. Meanwhile, new onions of lower quality are flooding the market, with prices ranging from Rs. 30 to 45 per kg.
Traders and sellers are anticipating that these prices will hold steady for the next month, as the supply of good-quality new onions is expected to increase in December. Currently, around 10 to 15 trucks of old onions and 30 to 35 trucks of new onions are entering the market daily. The new onions are mainly coming from Shrigonda and Karjat-Jamkhed in Ahilyanagar district, while the old onions are from various talukas in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts.
According to onion trader Ritesh Poman, the quality of the new onions currently in the market is not up to par. However, good-quality new onions are expected to arrive in early December, leading to a significant increase in supply. This influx of new onions will cause the price of old onions to decrease as they are gradually phased out.
The limited supply of old onions in the farmers’ market is also contributing to the price hike. The red onion season is expected to last until March, followed by the Garwa Onion season. Onions from the Pune division are in high demand in South India, as well as in Pune city and surrounding areas.
Overall, the quality of the old onions entering the market is good, driving up prices in both the wholesale and retail markets. With the anticipation of a better supply of new onions in the coming weeks, consumers can expect some relief from the high prices of old onions.
