In a recent Right to Information (RTI) query, it has been revealed that only 23 pubs and discotheques in Pune have official authorization to operate. These establishments are required to have a discotheque license in order to have a dance floor or dance area and must adhere to noise pollution laws and other regulations. The police have released a list of authorized pubs and discotheques in various areas of Pune.

Advocate Sameer Shaikh filed the RTI following a tragic accident in Kalyani Nagar that resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals. The incident involved a juvenile driving a luxury car at high speed after allegedly consuming alcohol at two prominent clubs in the city.

Authorities and industry representatives have commented on the issue, with Shaikh highlighting the prevalence of unlicensed establishments and the need for proper permissions. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that licenses are being reviewed and violations could result in cancellation. Ajinkya Udane of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has called for a reassessment of all licenses to ensure ease of business in the restaurant industry.
