Hey Pune folks, have you heard about the Japanese encephalitis vaccination campaign happening in your city? It’s all over the news, and for good reason. The state government has launched this initiative in Pune, Raigad, and Parbhani districts, as well as in certain municipal areas like Panvel, Parbhani, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Pune itself.

Since kicking off on March 1, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already vaccinated over 1 lakh children as part of their efforts to stop the spread of this dangerous disease. And they’re not stopping there – with a total of 10,43,420 children aged 1 to 15 years in Pune city targeted for immunization.

Dr. Nina Borade, the Chief Health Officer of PMC, shared that they’ve vaccinated 1,04,540 children so far. They’ve set up implementation and reporting cells at 15 regional offices, with medical officers coordinating efforts in their respective zones.

A whopping 6,692 vaccination sessions are planned across primary and secondary schools, anganwadis, and community centers in Pune. And guess what? 522 trained healthcare workers, along with 365 ASHA workers, 1,092 anganwadi workers, and 848 teachers are making it all happen. Even medical and nursing colleges in Pune are lending a hand.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer at PMC, mentioned that they’re even reaching out to private doctors in Pune to make sure parents understand the importance of getting their kids vaccinated.

Historically, Japanese encephalitis cases were more common in Vidarbha and Marathwada, where the vaccine was already part of government immunization programs. But now, due to increased migration, cases have been popping up in Pune too.

Dr. Aarti Kinikar, Head of the Pediatrics Department at Sassoon General Hospital, emphasized the need to vaccinate children in areas where cases have been reported to prevent the disease from spreading further.

So, the bottom line is, if you’re a parent in Pune, make sure you get your children vaccinated to protect them from Japanese encephalitis. Stay safe, everyone!
