As the assembly elections in Pune draw near, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has mobilized over 7,000 employees and officers to handle election work in eight assembly constituencies within the city. With a total of 8,462 polling booths in the district, around 2,500 of these booths are located within Pune city limits, catering to over 21 lakh voters.
To make the voting process more convenient for citizens, the Election Commission is focusing on setting up polling stations closer to residential areas, including large societies with spacious halls. The nomination process for the elections has already begun, and eight election offices have been set up to oversee the process in each constituency.
A significant workforce is required to ensure a smooth election process, with tasks such as fixed team assignments, mobile team duties, account verification, application processing, and document verification needing to be handled efficiently. With the increase in polling stations, each room at a center now requires at least five staff members to manage the operations effectively.
While employees from departments such as sanitation, health, water supply, and solid waste management have been exempt from election duties, employees from other departments have been called upon to assist with election-related tasks. Currently, over 7,000 employees have been assigned to election duties, including approximately 4,750 workers from classes one to three, 2,200 municipal school teachers, and staff from various other departments.
