1. MPCB Cracks Down on PCMC Depot for Violating Waste Management Regulations

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) recently issued a notice to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) depot for several violations in waste management practices. The violations included the absence of bioremediation for COVID-era biomedical waste, improper disposal of burnt oil, lack of methane management systems, and insufficient waste-processing capacity. The depot was also found to lack equipment for monitoring methane emissions and firefighting systems for safety.

  2. MPCB Directs PCMC to Take Immediate Action

In response to the violations, MPCB has directed PCMC to stop dumping new waste at the depot and submit a time-bound plan for bioremediation. Additionally, PCMC is required to install methane detection systems and firefighting equipment, regularly monitor methane emissions, maintain records of waste dumped at the depot, and process 100% of the accumulated waste. PCMC is also instructed to deposit ₹2 lakh as a bank guarantee with MPCB within 15 days.

  3. Legal Action Threatened for Non-Compliance

Failure to comply with the directives within the stipulated 15-day period could result in legal action, warned Jagannath Salunkhe, MPCB Regional Officer. The MPCB is firm in its stance on enforcing waste management regulations to ensure environmental safety and sustainability.

  4. Environmental Department Provides Clarity on Biomedical Waste Disposal

Sanjay Kulkarni from the Environment Department clarified that COVID-era biomedical waste is being treated and disposed of at a facility within YCM Hospital. He also mentioned that bioremediation efforts have been ongoing at the depot for the past year and assured that necessary updates would be provided to MPCB. The department is committed to addressing the concerns raised by MPCB and ensuring compliance with waste management regulations.
