1. Student safety is a top priority for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), as they have approved ₹3.79 crore for the installation of CCTV cameras in 300 municipal schools. This initiative will kick off with 80 girls’ schools in the first phase, with plans to expand to other schools in the future.
  2. Concerns about student safety, especially incidents of sexual assault on female students, have been on the rise in schools across the state. With over 1.25 lakh students currently enrolled in PMC schools, the need for enhanced security measures is more pressing than ever.
  3. A recent joint survey conducted by PMC’s Electricity and Education Departments evaluated the infrastructure of these schools, considering factors such as the number of rooms, floors, open spaces, and entry points. The total estimated cost for CCTV installation in all 300 schools is ₹17 crore.
  4. Despite budgetary constraints, PMC is committed to ensuring the safety of students and will prioritize girls’ schools in the first phase of CCTV installation. Plans are in place to include the remaining schools in the forthcoming 2024-25 budget.
  5. With the installation of CCTV cameras, PMC aims to create a safer environment for students, teachers, and staff members in municipal schools. This proactive measure is a step in the right direction towards ensuring the well-being and security of all individuals within the educational system.
