Pune’s Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hostel on Ghole Road is set to undergo much-needed repairs and maintenance work following the tragic deaths of two students due to dengue in August. The PMC has approved a tender worth ₹63.98 lakh to address critical issues within the facility.
The deaths of the students shed light on the poor living conditions at the hostel, sparking protests and criticism towards the PMC for neglecting basic health and infrastructure standards. In response, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale and MNS leader Amit Thackeray visited the hostel to assess the situation and interact with students.
Immediate measures, such as health check-ups and minor improvements, were taken to alleviate concerns. However, with more dengue cases reported, the need for comprehensive repairs became apparent. The allocated funds will be used to repair restrooms, upgrade water pipelines and drainage, fix doors and windows, control leaks, and improve flooring.
The hostel houses 400 students across 108 rooms and caters to students from grade 11 to undergraduate levels. The repairs aim to provide a safer and healthier living environment for the residents.
The tragic incident has prompted the PMC to prioritize the hostel’s infrastructure and ensure the well-being of its occupants. As repair work commences, students and their families are optimistic about the improvements that will enhance their quality of life in the hostel.
