So, here’s the scoop – the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Flyover on Karve Road is getting a facelift, thanks to some extra cash being thrown its way. The Pune Municipal Corporation has given the green light for an additional ₹14 crore to be paid to MahaMetro for the construction of this much-needed flyover at Nal Stop Chowk.
Originally budgeted at ₹39 crore back in 2020, the final cost of the project has now ballooned to ₹58 crore. MahaMetro claimed they needed an extra ₹19 crore to cover the increase, prompting PMC to call in the big guns – the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) – to evaluate the situation.
After some careful consideration, COEP determined that ₹14 crore of the additional costs were legit, and PMC has signed off on the payment. The funds for this extra cash infusion will come from the ₹15.80 crore set aside for Metro projects in the current municipal budget.
The Vanaz to Ramwadi Metro project, of which the flyover is a part, has been making waves in Pune since its full operation began in August 2024. The Yerawada Metro Station, one of the stops on the route, even pays homage to India’s freedom movement with its design inspired by the Dandi March.
All in all, this move by PMC shows their dedication to keeping projects on track while also being financially responsible. It’s all part of the plan to keep Pune moving forward and improving its infrastructure for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!
