It’s been a long wait for the residents and visitors of Pune as the much-anticipated redevelopment of Saras Baug Chowpatty still hasn’t seen any progress. The PMC administration approved the plan nearly ten months ago, but due to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections code of conduct, the project remains on hold.

Saras Baug Chowpatty is a cherished spot for both locals and tourists alike. Families often visit the pond and Shri Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir, while others enjoy the Peshwe Energy Park and the delicious food at the Chowpatty. It’s also a popular destination for late-night snacks for commuters and students. The Maharashtra State Government even recognized Saras Baug Chowpatty as a clean and food-friendly place, similar to Mumbai’s iconic Chowpatty.

The redevelopment plans were set in motion a year and a half ago when the PMC’s Encroachment Department noticed an increase in encroachments. Several shops were shut down, sparking discussions about revitalizing the area. After multiple revisions, a new plan was finally approved in December 2023, with an estimated cost of Rs 18.5 crore. However, despite the approvals, no work has begun yet.

The PMC had promised an audiovisual presentation to the commissioner in August, but that too has been delayed. The redevelopment plan includes 78 shops spread across two floors, underground parking for 200 vehicles, and special seating arrangements for customers. The project aims to rehabilitate 54 approved traders and auction off the remaining shops.

Somnath Bankar, Deputy Commissioner of the PMC Encroachment Department, assured that once the code of conduct is lifted, work on the Saras Baug Chowpatty redevelopment will resume. Until then, the residents and visitors of Pune will have to continue waiting for the much-needed facelift of this beloved spot.
