The PMC in Pune recently carried out a massive demolition drive, taking down unauthorized furniture showrooms, hotels, and sheds on the Katraj-Dehuroad bypass. This operation, which covered 90,000 square feet, aimed to clear encroachments in the area.

The building development department of the PMC led the demolition, focusing on the east side of the bypass. They targeted 11 unauthorized showrooms and hotels that were encroaching on the restricted area owned by HEMRL. The Defence Ministry’s High Energy Materials Research Laboratory had been complaining about these encroachments for some time.

While seven property owners managed to secure a stay from the court, preventing action against their properties, the municipal team went ahead with demolishing other unauthorized structures using heavy machinery like jaw cutter machines, JCBs, gas cutters, and breakers.

This recent demolition adds to the ongoing efforts by the PMC to tackle unauthorized constructions in the area. However, the issue of re-encroachment remains a concern, as these structures often reappear shortly after being demolished. It raises questions about the long-term effectiveness of such actions in clearing encroachments.
