Hey Pune folks, here’s some interesting news for you! The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to keep a close eye on the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) generated from mixed waste processing in the city. They have now made it mandatory for vehicles transporting RDF to be equipped with GPS tracking systems. This move is aimed at ensuring that the RDF reaches its intended destination – either cement companies or power generation plants.

With over 2,000 tons of garbage being produced in Pune every day, it’s crucial to handle RDF disposal scientifically. The Central and State Pollution Control Boards have emphasized the need for proper disposal of RDF, especially during the festive season. To comply with these directives, PMC has issued new guidelines for the disposal of RDF from waste treatment plants and the upcoming biomining project.

To incentivize compliance, PMC will pay 75% of the tipping fee to project-operating companies upfront. The remaining 25% will only be disbursed once receipts for the delivered RDF are submitted to cement or power generation companies. This requirement was not previously included in project terms and conditions but has now become mandatory.

In addition to GPS tracking, companies must provide certificates from cement or power generation plants confirming RDF supply. Weight records for each truck carrying RDF are also required. Despite these measures, reports have emerged suggesting that RDF is being supplied to unauthorized companies within the district.

A recent incident in Deulgaon Wada revealed a truck carrying combustible waste instead of RDF. The driver was handed over to the police, who filed a case against him under the Environment Act. The driver claimed to have collected the waste from PMC’s project at Ramtekdi.

It’s clear that PMC is stepping up its efforts to ensure the proper disposal of RDF in Pune. Let’s hope these measures lead to more responsible waste management practices in the city!
