- Karve Nagar resident fined ₹7.5 lakh for illegal debris dumping
- The Warje Karve Nagar regional ward office has imposed a hefty fine of ₹25,000 on each truck involved in illegal debris dumping, totaling up to ₹7.5 lakh. The resident in question has been given a day to comply with the regulations, or face further legal action as per the additional municipal commissioner.
- The debris was reportedly dumped at survey number A/1 in front of the Amrut Kalash Society on D P Road, Karve Nagar, a property owned by the resident. Despite owning the land, the debris poses a threat to the river’s flow and public health, according to a PMC official.
- PMC Ward Officer Vijay Naykal emphasized the importance of addressing the issue, stating that the debris obstructs the river’s flow and poses health hazards for citizens. To address these risks, the PMC has issued a notice and is considering filing a police case under the Solid Waste Management Act.
- This incident sheds light on the ongoing concerns surrounding pollution in the Mula-Mutha River. Earlier this year, areas like Ekta Nagari on Sinhagad Road faced severe flooding due to water release from the Khadakwasla Dam. Investigations revealed that debris dumping in the riverbed played a significant role in the flooding, leading to increased scrutiny of waste disposal practices in the region.
