In a bold move to recover outstanding property tax dues, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a seizure notice to the Sinhgad Institute in Erandwane. The institute reportedly owes a whopping ₹47.43 crore in property taxes, which have accumulated over the past five years.
Despite repeated reminders and legal actions from the PMC, the institute has failed to clear its dues. Last year, the PMC launched a recovery drive, which was challenged in court by the institute. However, the court ruled in favor of the PMC and directed the institute to settle its arrears. Yet, the outstanding taxes remain unpaid, prompting the PMC to take more aggressive measures.
As part of its intensified tax collection efforts, the PMC has deployed band teams across the city to create public awareness and encourage payment. These teams have already helped recover ₹11 crore in just four days. Additionally, the PMC has begun affixing seizure notices to properties of defaulters, like the Sinhgad Institute, and has warned of property auctions if the dues are not cleared within 30 days.
With a tax collection target of ₹2,727 crore for the financial year 2024-25, the PMC is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to recover outstanding dues. The case of the Sinhgad Institute serves as a warning to other defaulters in the city that the PMC means business when it comes to collecting taxes.
