Hey there, Pune folks! Big news coming your way from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). In a bid to crack down on malpractice and ensure public health safety, the PMC has decided to mandate green-colored tankers for the supply of purified sewage water from its Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). These tankers will also come with a clear label that reads, “This is not drinking water; it is STP water.”

This decision comes hot on the heels of a recent incident where a private tanker supplier allegedly delivered sewage water from the PMC’s STP to a society in Kharadi, passing it off as potable water. Yikes! Legal action is in the works, and the PMC is not taking any chances when it comes to preventing such incidents in the future.

With around 450 MLD of sewage processed daily through its nine STPs, the PMC is serious about ensuring that the treated water is used for its intended purposes. Last year, they made it mandatory for construction projects to use STP-treated water and even launched an app to streamline distribution. However, concerns have been raised about unchecked practices within the tanker lobby.

Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the PMC Water Supply Department, has called out the tanker lobby for unethical practices, including selling treated sewage as drinking water. To combat this, all tankers supplying STP-treated water will now have to be painted green and clearly labeled as non-potable water. Immediate implementation of this rule has been ordered, so keep an eye out for those green tankers!

Jagtap hopes that these measures will not only prevent such incidents but also raise awareness among residents and industries using treated water. The PMC wants to make sure that STP-treated water is used for its intended purposes and not misrepresented as drinking water. Stay safe, Pune!
