- Pune is all set to upgrade its sewage treatment capacity by adding 11 new sewage treatment plants, which will increase the capacity by 396 MLD. These plants are expected to be operational by June this year.
- Currently, PMC treats around 600 MLD out of the total 980 MLD sewage generated in the city. With the addition of the new STPs, the city’s sewage treatment capacity will rise to nearly 1,000 MLD, aligning with its overall sewage generation.
- State Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has raised concerns over PMC’s water demands and stressed the importance of treating all sewage generated in the city before seeking increased water quotas.
- The irrigation department has urged PMC to treat all its sewage before asking for more water supply. To address pollution in the Mula and Mutha rivers, PMC has partnered with JICA and planned 11 STPs and other infrastructure facilities.
- Construction work on 10 of the planned STPs is already in progress, with significant progress being made according to Jagdish Khanore, a senior official from PMC’s drainage department.
- The pollution in the Mula and Mutha rivers, which were among India’s 35 most polluted water bodies in 2015, is mainly due to untreated domestic wastewater discharge.
- PMC currently provides water to around 70 lakh people and manages 12.5 lakh properties within its limits. The new STPs aim to meet the irrigation department’s demands, reduce river pollution, and ensure sustainable water management for the city’s growing population.
