Pune residents can expect some changes on the roads soon, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to introduce a ‘pay and park’ system on five major roads as part of an experimental initiative. The PMC traffic planning department has submitted a proposal to the state urban development department for approval, as there are currently no local representatives to oversee the project.

The proposal details include a request for permission to implement ‘pay and park’ on five roads developed under urban street guidelines by the PMC. These roads have been specified in the proposal and will be subject to the parking policy norms upon approval.

The identified roads for the ‘pay and park’ system include Jangli Maharaj (J M) Road, Fergusson College (F C) Road, High Street Road (Balewadi), North Main Road (Koregaon Park), and Viman Nagar Road.

The PMC introduced a parking policy in 2016 with the aim of reducing congestion on city roads. The policy included the ‘pay and park’ facility on major city roads, but due to political disagreements, it was not implemented until now. The recent decision to move forward with the ‘pay and park’ system came after advocacy from city-based NGO Parisar and continued engagement from programme director Ranjit Gadgil.

The approved parking zones will be divided into three categories based on congestion levels: central business district areas, mobility corridors, and others. Parking charges will vary between daytime and nighttime hours, with hourly rates for two-wheelers ranging from ₹2 to ₹4 for on-street parking and ₹1 to ₹3 for off-street parking. Nighttime charges will also be set for the convenience of residents.

Overall, the implementation of the ‘pay and park’ system aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on the identified roads in Pune. Residents can look forward to a more organized parking system in the near future.
