Hey Pune folks, looks like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is in hot water – pun intended! The Water Resources Department has given them a strict deadline to clear a whopping ₹726 crore in outstanding water charges that have been piling up over the past nine years. Yikes!
If PMC doesn’t cough up the cash by 25th February, there could be some serious consequences – like a phased reduction in the city’s water supply. And with just over a month left in the financial year 2024-25, the pressure is on for PMC to settle the dues.
The city currently gets 11.50 TMC of drinking water from the Khadakwasla project, but the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority revised the water usage rates back in 2018. Despite this, PMC’s arrears from 2016 have continued to grow.
Executive Engineer Shweta Kurhade from the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department has issued a formal notice demanding payment, but PMC is pushing back. They want the fine for water pollution waived and are asking for charges for two TMC of water, currently billed as industrial use, to be reclassified as residential use.
These outstanding dues are causing headaches for the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department, which relies on the funds for crucial work like dam safety and canal maintenance. As the deadline looms, PMC is feeling the heat to settle the arrears or face some serious water supply disruptions.
So, Pune residents, keep an eye on this developing situation – your water supply could be at stake!
