Hey Pune peeps, big news coming your way! The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Estimates Committee recently shot down a whopping ₹49.56 crore proposal for cleaning toilets in municipal schools across the city. Talk about a hefty price tag!

With around 280 municipal schools spread out across 125 buildings in Pune, catering to roughly one lakh students, you’d think keeping the facilities clean would be a top priority. But despite receiving funds for maintenance and repairs, the schools are reportedly in a sorry state, affecting the learning environment for students.

Two years ago, PMC had the right idea when they decided to use jetting machines to clean school toilets, with an annual cost of ₹5 crore. But extending this initiative to clean entire school premises with a proposed budget of almost ₹50 crore? That raised some eyebrows in the PMC.

At a recent meeting, senior officials reviewed a new one-year tender from the Solid Waste Management Department, which aimed to allocate the hefty sum for mechanical cleaning of schools and toilets across five zones. With a cost estimate of ₹8 per square foot for cleaning, officials weren’t convinced this was the best use of funds.

Some officials even went as far as to question whether this proposal was more about cleaning toilets or cleaning out the civic treasury. Ouch, talk about some serious skepticism!

In a rare move, the proposal was unanimously rejected by the committee, which is pretty unusual considering most projects get the green light with a few tweaks here and there. The fact that a ₹50 crore proposal got the boot is definitely making waves in the municipal administration scene.

So, what’s next for the schools in Pune? Will they get the much-needed cleaning they deserve, or will the PMC have to come up with a more budget-friendly solution? Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
