If you’ve been stuck in traffic in Pune recently, you might want to thank the Pune Municipal Corporation for taking action. They recently removed a 300-meter stretch of the BRT route from Viman Nagar Chowk to Somnath Nagar Chowk on Vadgaon Sheri Nagar Road. This move comes after the removal of a section of the Yerwada to Viman Nagar Chowk route ten months ago in an effort to ease traffic congestion.

For the past two years, there have been demands from various political parties to remove the BRT route on this particular stretch due to frequent traffic jams. The PMC and PMPML have been criticized for neglecting this route, which serves as a major transportation artery for thousands of passengers every day and has also been the site of accidents due to the flawed implementation of the BRT project.

Rather than fixing the issues with the BRT route, the PMC sought a report from the Gokhale Institute, which led to the removal of the Yerwada to Viman Nagar Chowk section back in December 2023. Following this, local MLA Sunil Tingre and other officials pushed for the removal of the 300-meter section from Viman Nagar Chowk to Somnath Nagar Phata, which was finally carried out on Tuesday night with the help of a JCB.

With only three kilometers of the original eight-kilometer BRT route remaining on the road, it seems like the PMC is making strides to address the traffic woes in Pune. Let’s hope this move leads to smoother and safer commutes for everyone in the city.
