Hey Pune folks, buckle up because we’ve got some news on the Zika virus hitting our city. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has confirmed six cases of Zika, with pregnant women being at the highest risk. The health department is on high alert and prioritizing screenings for pregnant women in areas like Erandwane, Mundhwa, and Dahanukar Colony where cases have been detected.

To be safe rather than sorry, blood samples from 41 pregnant women in these regions have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing. The health department is not taking any chances and has already sent 64 samples, including those from pregnant women, to the NIV. However, only 25 results have come back so far, so there’s still some waiting to do.

With the monsoon season in full swing, the risk of insect-borne diseases is higher. The PMC is stepping up its game by conducting surveys and finding mosquito larvae in 246 houses. Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer, shared that they’ve already issued 82 notices and collected fines totaling Rs. 66,800 to keep the city safe.

Stay safe, Pune, and make sure to take precautions against mosquitoes to prevent the spread of diseases like Zika. Let’s all do our part to keep our city healthy and happy!
