Hey Pune peeps, have you heard about the recent cleaning spree by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to combat Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in the city? In the past ten days, PMC has already cleaned 25 water tanks and they are not stopping there!
Areas like Khadakwasla, Nandoshi, Nanded City, and Kirkitwadi on Sinhagad Road have seen a rise in suspected GBS cases, sparking concerns about contaminated water supply. To tackle this issue, PMC has initiated a massive cleaning drive for the city’s water reservoirs.
The Water Supply Department is working overtime to ensure safe drinking water for all residents. They are currently cleaning the advanced Elevated Storage Reservoirs (ESR) and Underground Ground Service Reservoirs (GSR) in the city. Out of the 155 municipal water tanks, 25 have already been cleaned, with the rest scheduled for completion within a month.
During the cleaning process, the water supply is being temporarily halted in affected areas to get rid of accumulated silt and sand that could compromise water purity. Water Supply Department head Nandkishore Jagtap assured that precautions are being taken to minimize disruptions in water supply.
Recent water sample tests in GBS-affected areas have detected bacteria linked to the disease, prompting PMC to order a comprehensive tank-cleaning drive. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has directed immediate action to contain the situation.
But that’s not all – concerns have also been raised about unfit drinking water from Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants. PMC has already shut down one plant and is considering legal action against violators who continue to operate despite reports of contamination. A citywide inspection of RO plants will kick off on Monday, 24th February.
While PMC officials have assured that no chemicals are used during tank cleaning, they have not specified how often these maintenance operations are carried out. But one thing is for sure – PMC is committed to ensuring clean water supply as part of its strategy to combat the spread of GBS. Stay safe and stay hydrated, Pune!
