The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is not taking the issue of defacement of civic spaces lightly. In a recent crackdown, the PMC has initiated criminal proceedings against 110 individuals, including advertising agency operators, for installing illegal banners and hoardings around the city.
According to PMC officials, these actions are in compliance with the administration’s solid waste management rules and directives from the Supreme Court. Prithviraj BP, Additional Commissioner of the PMC, stated, “We will not tolerate unauthorized advertisements that deface public areas. Complaints will be filed against those responsible.”
To tackle the issue, the PMC’s sky sign department is working closely with the anti-encroachment department to address violations related to the illegal placement of banners and hoardings in Pune.
Citizens and activists are also calling for stricter measures to prevent such violations. They stress the importance of transparency in permissions for advertising. An activist suggested that details of approvals should be prominently displayed on all advertising materials in large, bold text.
Furthermore, the activist proposed that the PMC should also target the source of the problem by requiring proof of permission for printing ad materials at printing presses and flex manufacturers. Simply removing illegal banners will not have a lasting impact, according to the activist.
It seems like the PMC is taking a proactive approach to combat the issue of defacement in Pune, and residents are hopeful that these efforts will lead to a cleaner and more visually appealing city.
