PMC Takes Steps To Combat Pollution At Vaikunth Crematorium In Pune For Cleaner Environment With Help Of Local Authorities

1. Manisha Shekatkar, head of the Electrical Department at PMC, recently expressed concerns about emissions from the Vaikunth crematorium. Both the CPCB and MPCB are actively inspecting the emissions to address the issue.
2. Shekatkar mentioned ongoing coordination with these agencies to support inspection efforts and find ways to reduce emissions and improve pollution control at the crematorium.
3. Discussions are underway with the company operating the crematorium to implement measures to reduce emissions. The meeting also resulted in decisions to conduct regular AQI inspections in the area and monitor the health of nearby residents through the Health Department.
4. The PMC will provide a list of alternative cemeteries to families to decrease the number of cremations at Vaikunth crematorium for a cleaner environment.
5. The PMC’s Electricity Department will publish a list of existing cemeteries in Pune, and the Disaster Management Department will develop an SOP for emergencies at the crematorium to manage pollution levels and create a healthier environment for residents.
