In a bid to enhance safety measures for students traveling on Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML) buses, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a proactive step by deciding to appoint female security guards on these buses. This decision comes in the wake of the recent Swargate ST Bus Stand rape incident involving a 26-year-old woman.

The move to appoint female security guards on PMPML buses is aimed at ensuring the safe transportation of students attending Pune Municipal Corporation schools. With approximately 200 to 300 buses transporting students to and from municipal schools in Pune, the presence of female security guards on these buses will provide an added layer of protection for the students.

Earlier, the state government had mandated the appointment of female assistants in private school buses and school vans to prioritize the safety of female students. However, this rule did not extend to PMPML buses catering to students from municipal schools. In light of this, the PMC has taken the initiative to implement this safety measure on PMPML buses as well.

According to Additional Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation, Prithviraj B.P., the decision to appoint female security guards on PMPML buses was made after consultations with officials from the Municipal Corporation’s Education Board and various departments of the Municipal Administration. The primary objective is to ensure the safety and security of students traveling on these buses.

The implementation of female security guards on PMPML buses transporting students to and from municipal schools underscores the PMC’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of its citizens, especially students. This proactive step is a commendable move towards creating a safer environment for students in Pune.
