Hey Pune folks, it’s been a wet and wild time in the city lately thanks to some heavy rainfall. But along with the rain came some serious flooding, especially on Sinhagad Road. Turns out, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) discovered that unauthorized optical fibre cables laid by Internet service providers (ISPs) were causing major blockages in the stormwater lines, making the situation even worse.

Areas like Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, Pune University Road, and even parts of Vadgaon Sheri were hit hard by the waterlogging. PMC officials, along with the Pune traffic police, did some investigating and found that these cables were the culprit. They wasted no time in cutting them out to get the water flowing again.

But that’s not all – unauthorized constructions on nullahs were also found to be messing with the water drainage system. This, along with clogged drainage systems, made the flooding worse than it needed to be. The PMC is cracking down on these encroachments and has requested the building permission and construction departments to clear them out.

To add to the chaos, the construction of Pune Metro Line 3 on Ganeshkhind Road was also a contributing factor to the flooding. The PMC has asked metro officials to switch out cement stormwater chambers for iron ones to help with faster drainage. They’re also taking action against contractors who buried stormwater drain chambers during road resurfacing projects, making matters worse.

Sahebrao Dandge, the superintending engineer of the road department, has made it clear that they’re not messing around. Road department officials have been told to cut out any optical fibre cables found in stormwater drains and to take action against those responsible. It looks like the PMC is serious about getting things back to normal in Pune, so let’s hope they can sort it out soon!
