Hey Pune folks, it looks like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a new approach to boost revenue by targeting businesses in slum areas. The PMC plans to impose commercial taxes on these enterprises in an effort to recover dues and generate around ₹100 crore.

According to Madhav Jagtap from PMC’s property tax department, a survey will be conducted to identify businesses in slum areas, and tax bills will be issued accordingly. With Pune having 486 slums and Pimpri-Chinchwad with 71, this initiative aims to bring in much-needed revenue for the city.

However, some civic activists are questioning the PMC’s priorities, suggesting that the focus should be on recovering dues from major defaulters like mobile tower companies. Vivek Velankar from Sajag Nagrik Manch emphasized the importance of holding habitual defaulters accountable and implementing policies to ensure compliance.

Velankar also suggested introducing incentives for regular taxpayers to boost overall tax collection and encourage timely payments. Currently, PMC levies property tax under various components like general tax, conservancy tax, sewage tax, and street tax.

In addition to tax initiatives, efforts to rehabilitate slum dwellers under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) have been ongoing since 2005. Approximately 11,000 slum residents, including both residential and commercial establishments, have been rehabilitated through 70 completed projects in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

It seems like the PMC is making moves to improve revenue collection and address concerns over dues from defaulters, while also focusing on the redevelopment of slum areas for a more sustainable future. Let’s see how these initiatives shape up in the coming months!
