The cremation of dead animals at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj has come to a temporary halt due to complaints from local residents about strong foul odors and excessive smoke in the area. The issue arose after the Pune Municipal Corporation’s animal crematorium at Naidu Hospital had to close for urgent repairs.
Pune experiences the death of around 10 to 12 animals daily, which need proper disposal. With the Naidu Hospital crematorium out of commission, the PMC had to find an alternative solution. However, cremating animals at the zoo led to unexpected problems, including complaints from residents and concerns from the zoo management about disruption to their regulations.
In response to these issues, the Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has ordered the immediate halt of animal cremations at the zoo. Instead, deceased animals will now be sent to the Pimpri-Chinchwad crematorium for disposal until repairs at the Naidu Hospital crematorium are completed.
The repairs at the Naidu Hospital crematorium are almost finished, and the facility is expected to reopen soon. This temporary solution is expected to relieve residents of the odor and smoke problems in the area, ensuring proper disposal of deceased animals in Pune.
