Hey Pune peeps, here’s some hot news coming your way! The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to auction off a whopping 2,000 properties whose owners have been slacking on their property tax payments. And get this, these properties together owe a jaw-dropping Rs 200 crore in arrears. Yikes!

The auction process is set to be completed before March, but here’s the kicker – previous auctions haven’t exactly been a hit. Will this one fare any better? Only time will tell.

PMC’s Taxation and Tax Collection Department is currently dealing with a hefty Rs 10,000 crore in arrears from properties all over Pune. The situation is so dire that properties caught up in legal disputes are being sealed by the PMC. This year alone, 2,600 properties have been sealed, with 2,000 of them now up for grabs in the auction.

To handle this massive auction, PMC has put together a dedicated team. This team will be responsible for setting property prices, sending out notices to defaulting property owners, and making sure the auction process runs smoothly, according to Madhav Jagtap, the Head of the Taxation and Tax Collection Department.

So far, PMC has raked in Rs 1,870 crore through property taxes, falling short of the Rs 2,727 crore target for this financial year. This shortfall is partly due to a hold placed by the Maharashtra State Government on collecting property tax from 34 newly included villages. To make up for it, PMC is focusing on recovering arrears from other areas, leading to the sealing and auctioning off of properties left and right.

And that’s the latest scoop on what’s happening in Pune. Stay tuned for more updates!
