Hey there, Pune folks! It looks like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is on a mission to clean up the city’s riverbeds. They’ve decided to get rid of those old and outdated barrages that are just causing more harm than good.
According to PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., these barrages are no longer serving their purpose and are actually putting the city at risk of flooding. The sediment buildup caused by these structures is obstructing water flow and causing potential flood situations, especially when water is released from dams.
The PMC plans to work with the Water Resources Department to dismantle these barrages and clear out any vegetation that’s blocking the natural flow of water in the rivers. Some of the areas affected include the Mula-Mutha rivers near Vrudheshwar-Siddheshwar Ghat, Dengle Bridge, Shivane, Khadki, and Sangvi.
In addition to removing the barrages, the PMC is also looking to desilt lakes like Katraj, Jambhulwadi, and Pashan to improve water management in the city. They’re also cracking down on uneven maintenance of sewage pipelines across wards, making sure that essential tasks are prioritized and completed.
Prithviraj mentioned that a recent meeting was held to review actions taken to prevent urban flooding, including addressing flood-prone areas, using water pumps, and budgeting for future flood mitigation efforts. It looks like PMC is really stepping up their game to keep Pune safe and flood-free. Good job, PMC!
